MORRIS COUNTY, NJ - The Salvation Army Dover Corps will be dedicating its new Disaster Canteen on Friday, Sept. 12. This mobile Feeding Kitchen on Wheels is equipped to feed up to 1,500 meals per day should disaster strike.

The flooding areas of Denville and surrounding towns are no stranger to the raging waters and massive damage that can be brought on by floods and hurricanes. Morris & Sussex County residents have seen their share of rain and hurricane damage over the last few years from Hurricane Irene to Hurricane Sandy many of whom were forced to evacuate their homes & businesses.

The Salvation Army has come to the aid of local residents and surrounding Jersey towns time and time again.  Neighbors are comforted by the strength and compassion that Salvation Army staff & volunteers provide on a moment notice. With the addition of the canteen, Salvation Army services will be even greater in Morris & Sussex County in the event of a disaster.

The Salvation Army has been responding to emergencies and disasters for over 100 years, organizing a trained and committed group of people, on call, enabling an immediate response anywhere in the United States and virtually anywhere in the world. The Salvation Army considers it a special assignment to see to the needs of not only the victims of disaster, but the ongoing requirements of the responders resulting in The Salvation Army often being the first on the scene and the last to leave. The Salvation Army operates a fleet of mobile feeding units, traditionally referred to as canteens, throughout the United States which are stocked and ready to respond both locally and wherever needed. One such canteen is now located at The Salvation Army in Dover.

The Salvation Army does not let such a valuable resource lie idle when not serving an emergency, but plans to utilize the canteen for community events and a mobile feeding program in neighborhoods where there are economically challenged people who may not have access to a hot meal, especially during the cold months.

Opportunities to join the volunteer emergency disaster team are available.

Your time and financial contribution to the canteen are needed and will support Salvation Army programs and services all year round.

Donors and volunteers can learn more about giving to The Salvation Army by calling 973-366-0764 or visiting our website at www.salvationarmynj.org/dover.  Also, anyone interested in attending the dedication ceremony on Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. should contact The Salvation Army.
