MONTCLAIR, NJ - The Porchistas Home Studio & Performance Space hosted a concert Friday for the Montclair community.  Songwriter and guitarist Alan Smith greeted a broad audience of all ages.

Alan has developed friendships with musicians using his art as a vehicle for community building.  When not on the porch making music, Alan Smith can be found in Costa Rica working at a sustainable living and a natural building education center.

Friday evening The Porchistas hosted the band Saulo Duarte e a Unidade from Brazil, with support from New Jersey bands Kiwi and The One & Nines.  All three bands performed for over 150 guests that kept arriving throughout the evening.

Kiwi’s lead singer Alex Tea sang the lyrics “big ship sailing on the ocean, no need for commotion.”  The R&B singer sang with reggae tones.

The second band to play was The One & Nines.  Vera Sousa, who is a vocalist with the group, sang while guests relaxed and others danced.

Previous collaboration between the New Jersey Bands and the Brazilian band is what brought Saulo Duarte e a Unidade to Montclair.  Saulo Duarte, lead singer with the group, told people where he came from with a broad smile, “From Belem do Para, Northern Brazil.  We call it the mouth of the Amazon”.

At around 9:00 pm they began to sing with mixtures of cumbia, carimbó, lambada, reggae and more.   Whether guests were on the lawn or inside the house, everybody was moving.

The band is touring the United States for the launch of their new album “Quente” (meaning hot) which was officially launched July 23rd from Brazil to Miami, to Montclair and then to Jersey City.

Guitarist and vocalist Saulo Duarte said, “Montclair is a great town.  It isn’t everywhere that you can come in, have a concert in a back yard and no one complains about the noise.  If anything, folks actually come out to support the arts.  What a great community.”
