The Oddities of Baseball Scoring

New Providence Memorial Library

Thursday, March 13, 2014 • 5:50pm

John Nolan, the official scorer for the Somerset Patriots, is coming to New Providence Memorial Library on Sunday, March 23 at 2 p.m. He’ll be speaking about The Oddities of Baseball Scoring.

Did you know that there are 23 ways for a player to get to first base, including a walk, hit-by-pitch, catcher interference, fair ball hits runner, dropped sacrifice fly, single and 17 more?  John will entertain us with the history and anecdotes of baseball scoring and challenge us with the question, “How would I score it?”

Union County resident, John Nolan, has been the official scorer for the Somerset Patriots of the independent Atlantic league since 1999 and during that time has scored more than 900 professional baseball games.  John encourages the audience participation of young and old alike while sharing his knowledge of baseball scoring.  He will begin his 16th season with the Patriots on opening night, April 25.

The afternoon is a great way to refocus on America’s beloved pastime and the start of the 2014 baseball season.  Wear your favorite team hat and shirt!
