Let yourself drift into the story of A Thousand and One Nights when the Metropolitan Orchestra of NJ opens its 42 season featuring Rimsky –Korsakov’s well-known symphonic suite, Scheherazade - Sunday afternoon, November 3 at 3:00 pm – Millburn Middle School, 25 Old Short Hills Rd.
Under the direction of Maestro Michael Stratechuk, the afternoon’s program, titled, Russian Favorites, will feature concertmaster, Michael Avagliano as solo violin in Scheherazade. Rimsky-Korsakov, one of the great Russian composers of 19th century romanticism and fascinated by program music, tells the story of the Sultan Schahriar, and the Sultana Scheherazade through his amazing use of instrumentation. The musical theme of narrator is given by a violin solo whose melody reappears throughout the four movements serving as a unifying thread.
Also included in the program will be Alexander Borodin’s In the Steppes of Central Asia, and Tchaikovsky’s well-known Swan Lake Suite Op. 20.
