The Junior League of Summit is pleased to offer $15,000 in scholarships to local high school students this year, three scholarships at $5,000 each.  Applications are available on the Junior League website at www.jlsummit.org and are due by March 15, 2013.

In honor of the late Shirley Wight Keeney, Past President of the Junior League of Summit, this scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who live or attend school in Summit, Chatham, New Providence, or Berkeley Heights, are in the top third of their graduating class, and have shown significant volunteer work, which complements the League's mission, during their high school years.

Mrs. Keeney was a much admired and dedicated volunteer in the community.  She served as President of the League from 1953 to 1955 and, in addition to her other League work, served as a member and President of the Summit Convalescent Committee; head of the Visiting Nurse Association of Summit, New Providence, and Berkeley Heights; and was also active in Overlook Twigs and Follies, the American Red Cross, the Adele Lynch Nursing and Allied Health Scholarships Committee, the Summit Historical Society, and the Summit Speech School.  In 1989, Mrs. Keeney received a Summit YWCA award for being one of five "Outstanding Women in the Community".  The League seeks out candidates for the Shirley Wight Keeney scholarship who embody this spirit of voluntarism and care for community.

The Junior League of Summit, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective leadership and action of trained volunteers.  Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.  The current focus of the League is "Be Fit, Be Fine: Promoting Health and Wellness for Children in our Community."
