The Importance of a Living and Legal Will

Every single person in Morris County should have a living and a legal will.

For those that don’t know, a living will is a legal document that an individual can use to outline his or her wishes regarding life prolonging medical treatments. A legal will dictates where and individual’s estate goes to when he or she passes away.

Living wills save families thousands of dollars because they don’t have to utilize potentially wasteful and unwanted health care treatments. They save taxpayer dollars too because Medicare won’t be footing the bill for unwanted treatments.

When someone dies without a legal will, his or her estate goes through a costly and time-consuming probate process via the surrogate’s office. What happens to their estate is at the discretion of the government and the law. The County Surrogate, the individual responsible to mandate all aspects of a will following a person’s death, must follow the state guidelines.

Without a living or legal will, you are gambling with your life and your estate.

With these wills, you choose exactly where your estate goes and how doctors handle your life. There won’t be a single decision made that doesn’t comply with your wishes.

We are one of you. This isn’t about politics. This is about helping you live the best possible life and paving the way to do so. The three of us will work together at the federal, and county level to ensure that all of your problems are addressed and solved.

Mark Dunec is the Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 11th District;

George Tannous is the Democratic candidate for Morris County Surrogate; and

Matt Davis is the Democratic candidate for Morris County Freeholder
