With thoughts of gathering folks for a good time, and to raise money for a good cause, members of Temple Emanu-El Westfield were invited to respond to an exciting fund-raising suggestion. In lieu of  hosting a huge event where a large number of congregants would gather with the intent of raising money for the synagogue, 14 members of Temple Emanu-El volunteered their homes, food, and creativity for a good cause.

Hosted by Susan and Dennis Dickstein, 23 guests gathered at their Westfield home, on Saturday, February 2, for a delightful evening of fun, great food, and camaraderie.

“I titled my theme, 'When You Knish Upon a Star,'” said Second Vice President and Hostess Susan Dickstein. “As host and hostess, we are responsible for funding the project.  All of the money collected goes to Temple Emanu-El, located on East Broad Street in Westfield.”

The evening began with Dennis Dickstein dividing the men and women into three separate groups. Members then responded to a round of challenging games, which many times erupted into gales of laughter.

Halfway through the evening, the Dicksteins called their guests to dinner. Catered by Deli King of Clark, platters were filled with turkey, roast beef, pastrami, corned beef, cole slaw, potato salad, pickles and assorted accompaniments ... including Susan’s marvelous kugel.

And then it was time for dessert. Along with an enormous bowl of beautiful cut-up fresh fruit, there was rugalach from the Swiss Pastry Shoppe in Scotch Plains and a host of other delicious desserts. Everyone agreed, “It was indeed a lovely way to spend an evening.”
