CHATHAM, NJ - The School District of the Chathams unanimously adopted a policy that allows teachers to transport students in their private vehicles at the board of education meeting held on Wednesday.

The policy details the situations and restrictions in which teachers, traveling to a specific event, can transport students in their private vehicles to and from the school. According to Jill Critchley Weber, vice president of the board, it is a policy already in practice, but adopted to set specific written guidelines for such procedures.

The most common use of this policy would be for students traveling to a specific sporting event, where the number of students competing would be small enough to preclude the hiring of a bus.

Any student being transported by a teacher must be accompanied by another student. There are a number of restrictions, including advance written approval for any such transportation. Teachers would be reimbursed for mileage and documented parking and tolls.

In other business, the board accepted more than $11,600 in grants from the Chatham Education Foundation to finance a number of school investments. Among the grants are $2,676 for the "CHS Pulse Broadcast Studio" and $2,050.40 for "Wireless Remotes for the Classroom,"  and $1,425.55 for "3D Scanning," all at Chatham High School.
