LIVINGSTON, NJ - Khalil Garnes riles up the crowd with his electrifying shooting and ball handling abilities, giving the Lancer varsity squad a spark in every game. Averaging 17.3 points a game last week, his consistent three-point shooting skills provided the boys basketball team with an offensive advantage.
As he put it, his skills, namely offensively, are much improved over last season due to the fact that he “...put in a lot of time in at the gym just improving on my basic fundamentals...”
For his extraordinary offensive output throughout the season, The Alternative Press of Livingston has named Khalil Garnes the Athlete of the Week.
Starting point guard, Eli Friedman, expressed the team’s appreciation for Garnes’ efforts by stating that, “Khalil works extremely hard and dedicated himself to his craft. Whether it’s on the floor or in the classroom, he’s always working hard. He always wants to get better, which is a great characteristic to have. It shows in his production on the floor.”
His continued drive to improve has become very evident this season. Garnes has developed many facets of his game—he is now a better finisher at the rim, an improved ball handler and an overall stronger player from last year.
Livingston’s Coach Dave Cohen has relied on Garnes whenever he is need of hustle and offensive boost. Other teams have realized this and have strategized defensively based on Garnes’ attacking play. Cougar assistant coach Russell Carter once said, “Our goal was to stop number 21, [Khalil Garnes]” which shows that Garnes is a well-respected player.
Garnes said he is looking to continue his basketball career in college; however, he is not sure as to where that will be just yet. Garnes explained, “I do plan to play in college, whether I end up playing division 1 or division 3. I'm still waiting to hear back from a bunch of schools though, so I'm not sure yet. Right now, I’m focused on having a good rest of the season and getting some wins.”
