CHATHAM, NJ - Hundreds of Chatham Borough residents have taken the Green Challenge since it started in 2011. Residents who take the Green Challenge pledge to take specific everyday actions to live more sustainably.
Residents can take the challenge at the Green level, the Greener level, or the Greenest level.
At the Green level, residents pledge to do five actions from a list of 19 challenges. These challenges include: using reusable shopping bags, shopping locally to save fuel, reducing car idling, recycling, turning off lights, or planting a tree.
At the Greener level, residents pledge to do at least eight Green actions plus two Greener actions, such as: finding alternatives to bottled water or planting a rain garden.
At the Greenest level, residents pledge to do at least 15 Green and Greener actions, plus an additional Greenest action.
The pledge form is available online through the Environmental Commission tab on the Chatham Borough website, at the following link: www.chathamborough.org/chatham/Boards%26Commissions/Commissions/Environmental Commission/Green Intiatives Committee/Green Challenges.pdf or by going to www.chathamborough.org and clicking on Boards and Commissions, then Environmental Commission, then Green Challenges.
The Green Challenge will also be available at various public events, including Fishawack Festival on June 14, 2014, the Green Fair of the Chathams, on Saturday, September 20, 2014, and at the Eco and Film and Discussion series of the Chathams, which takes place on the first Thursday of most months at the Library of the Chathams.
Completed Green Challenge forms should be returned to: Chatham Borough Environmental Commission, Borough of Chatham, 54 Fairmount Ave., Chatham, NJ 07928.
Once at least 3.5% of Chatham Borough residents have taken the Green Challenge, a random drawing of all Green Challenge takers will be held. The winner of the drawing will receive a new rain barrel. Rain barrels collect rainwater to be used for gardening.
