Szynal, Glynn Lead Second-Half Blitz as Summit Defeats West Essex 13-7

SUMMIT, NJ - Sara Szynal scored seven goals, and goalie Kady Glynn made 12 saves, as the Summit Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team put on a powerful second-half performance to defeat West Essex 13-7.

The game was truly a tale of two halves.  In the first half, West Essex's speed and athleticism was giving the Hilltoppers problems and, even though Summit scored two very quick goals to start the game, they actually trailed by 4-3 and 6-5 scores.  A goal by Maggie Moriarty with just seven seconds remaining in the half sent the teams to the break deadlocked at six apiece.

Szynal (2), Moriarty (2), Madeleine Gramigna and Emily Kalin had first half goals for Summit, while Glynn came up in big in goal, stopping several point blank shots.

Summit Head Coach Mike Walsh credited his assistant coaches with identifying and implementing a defensive adjustment, which contributed to the second half being a polar opposite of the first.

"We were a little scattered in the first half," said Walsh.  "Their speed was giving us some problems, so adjusted our defense, switched off our ball pressure defense and went to a more traditional, help defense.  Our defense played great, and the shots we gave up were from angles Katy could see.  And when she sees it, she makes the saves."

Another key to the second half dominance was the face-off work of Gramigna, who dominated in the area.  "We had the ball for what seemed like the entire second half," said Walsh.  "Maddie was awesome."

The ball possession cranked open the goal faucet in a half Summit won going away 7-1.  Five of the tallies came from sophomore Szynal, and Moriarty and Stephanie Ford had the others.  All told, the Hilltoppers scored the last five goals of the game.

Next up for Summit, a home encounter with Caldwell on April 14, followed by an away match-up versus Kent Place on April 16.  Both games face-off at 4 p.m.
