Sparta — Candidate Statements

Sussex County Needs BiPartisan Governance

Susan Williams

As a candidate for Sussex County Freeholder, I participated in a Candidates Night sponsored by the Ogdensburg Historical Society last Tuesday (October 16th).  I spoke about an issue that I believe is an important one for Sussex County residents to think about.  It’s this: One party governance is not in the interest of Sussex County.  And Governor Chris Christie made that same point earlier that day.

I attended the Governorʼs Town Hall Meeting in West Milford the morning of the debate. He spoke about many things. Prominent was his idea that there shouldn’t be partisan strongholds and that New Jersey needs across-the-aisle cooperation in government.

When it was time for the public to participate in the Governor’s meeting, I raised my hand and, to my surprise, I was allowed to ask a question. After thanking the Governor for the opportunity, I mentioned that I come from Sussex County. I told him that it is a one-party, Republican stronghold, governed by one of the ʻclubsʼ he spoke about. I told him that Sussex County was in the situation he described except that his ruling Democratic ʻtheyʼ, elsewhere, is a ruling Republican "they" here.

The Governor answered with a discussion about the need for two-party cooperation in Trenton, and elsewhere. Partisan strongholds arenʼt in the best interest of New Jersey. He said that we must learn to work together to improve the flow of ideas. I thanked the Governor and told him that I agreed with his point. I also told him that was why I stepped up to run for Freeholder in Sussex County.

The point of this letter, and the remarks I made Tuesday evening, is: even Governor Christie sees that one party rule and partisan strongholds arenʼt productive. We need creative solutions, innovative ideas, and most of all, ethics reform. Sussex County voters would do well to elect a Democrat to the Board of Chosen Freeholders. It would be a step towards eliminating partisan strongholds where leaders make decisions in lockstep with one another. It would expand the pool of ideas and lead to finding more creative solutions to the myriad of problems and concerns we face here in Sussex County.

I am a person who thinks outside the box, and comes up with creative solutions. I will work with my colleagues on the other side of the partisan aisle. I can help improve governance in our county.

Please vote for me, Susan Williams for Freeholder on Tuesday, November 6th.
