FANWOOD, NJ – Joe Palmer of the Netherwood section of Plainfield came out of the Fanwood A & P on South Avenue Tuesday night to find he had a flat tire. However, after comparing notes with several other shoppers who he found also changing tires, it was determined they had been victims of a tire slasher and police were called.
“It appears that between 6:15 and 6:45, someone came through the parking lot of Fanwood Liquor and slashed tires on a car there and then came on to the A & P parking lot and slashed tires on four more cars,” said Palmer. “They actually slashed three of my tires. With only one spare, I had to call AAA to come and tow my car.”
Fanwood Officers Thomas Chisholm and Phillip Ugone responded to the call, and police moved quickly and had someone in custody by Wednesday.
“We have a person of interest in custody,” said Fanwood Police Chief Richard Trigo. “Once we have completed our investigation we will be releasing more details.”
“The police officers who responded were really great,” said Palmer. “While this was upsetting, it could have been raining, snowing or 103 degrees – and I got the chance to meet up with some old friends in the parking lot.”
