SUMMIT, NJ – The storied halls of Summit High School’s Athletic Wing will soon have a new name added to the long list of successful Hilltoppers.

With the varsity ice hockey team’s 4-1 victory over rival Westfield on Wednesday, Summit’s starting goaltender, Garrett McGowan, won his 40th career game, breaking the Hilltoppers’ all-time record.

The funny thing is, McGowan thought he already owned the feat.

“The record is nice,” the senior net-minder said. “I didn’t really know I was going to get it this year. I thought I had it last year. Its nice to get it tonight, against Westfield our big rivals. I will hopefully get more wins this year and a ring at the end.”

McGowan has been a staple to Summit’s recent success on the ice. One of Union County’s top goalies, he was named to the All-County team last season.

“It is great having him,” Summit senior captain Liam McLaughlin said. “Garrett’s a great goalie. He comes to work every day. He gets focused right before the game every day. Its just great having him behind us.”

McGowan and the rest of the Summit squad look to win fourth game of the year when the Hilltoppers return to the ice on Friday to face Johnson at the Union Sports Arena. Face-off is scheduled for 4:10 p.m.
