SUMMIT, NJ - The Summit Police Department is investigating a “distraction” type burglary, which occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on May 5.

A male, claiming to work for the water company, arrived at a Glenside Avenue residence and advised the homeowner that he had been sent there to check the condition of his water.  The male had the homeowner escort him to the bathroom where he ran the sink water and flushed the toilet a number of times.  The homeowner became suspicious and asked the male to produce his water company identification which prompted the male to flee the residence.

The male was seen fleeing the area in a red Dodge Ram pick-up truck, with lift kit, and rock star rims.  The homeowner later discovered cash and jewelry missing from the master bedroom.  The police determined that while the homeowner was distracted by the suspect, an accomplice entered the residence and committed the theft.

The suspect was described as male with a medium complexion in his mid-twenties wearing a Yankees cap and dark clothing.

Approximately 20 minutes prior to the incident, a Michigan Avenue resident reported that a male, matching the suspect’s description and operating a similar vehicle, came to his door claiming that he had extra tar and asked if he wanted his driveway resealed.  The homeowner immediately became suspicious and advised the man to leave before calling the police.

Police believe the suspect was working with an accomplice, who was described as a male with a medium complexion driving a black BMW.
