BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - The Berkeley Heights Education Foundation (BHEF), in partnership with Summit Medical Group (SMG), is sponsoring “Live From Surgery,” an educational program that will offer up to 100 students from Governor Livingston High School (GLHS) an opportunity to observe a live surgery via video teleconference and interact with the surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and technicians.   On March 11, 2014, the GLHS students will travel to Liberty Science Center (LSC) and observe a live kidney transplant.   During the two and half hour live program, the students will participate in guided discussions with a LSC facilitator, manipulate sample medical equipment that is actually used during the procedure as well as ask questions “real time” of the medical staff running the surgery.

“The BHEF is excited to bring this innovative program to science students at GL and we want to recognize the support of Summit Medical Group as one of our Partners in Education,” said BHEF President Pam Yoss.   “Thanks to the generous support of SMG, students will learn about the education paths and responsibilities of the medical staff and have the unique opportunity to interact with these professionals during an actual surgery.”

The GL science department is identifying the students who will attend and is coordinating the science curriculum subject matter to complement this program.  For more information about “Live from Surgery.”

“We value our partnership with the BHEF and want to thank SMG for their support.  The GLHS teaching professionals in the science department will integrate this program into the science curriculum to increase student awareness about the role of science in a wide range of professions “said GLHS spokesperson, Susan Rembetsy, Supervisor of Art K-12, Computers K-8 and Science 6-12 for the Berkeley Heights Schools.

“With its strong presence in the Berkeley Heights community, we appreciate the opportunity to expand our partnership with SMG.  This program will encourage students to examine, pursue and gain valuable exposure to careers in the medical field,” added Yoss.
