SUMMIT, NJ - David Gill scored with 36 seconds remaining in the second overtime period, and Chatham defeated the Summit High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team, 5-4, at Investors Bank Field.

Unlike their win against Delbarton, Summit was not as sharp as they needed to be against the Cougars, who were coming off a 11-7 loss to Ridge.  Both offensive zone execution and defensive zone clearance were slightly off, creating turnovers and surrendering possession.  Defensively, the Hilltoppers -- especially goalie Sam Bebout -- hung tough.

Bebout nearly won the game for Summit, repeatedly stoning Chatham from long range and close in, giving the Hilltopper offense a chance to nick a win.  Indeed, Summit fought back from one-goal deficits to tie the game at 1-1 and 2-2, through goals by John Cordrey and Connor Murphy, heading into halftime.

Summit took the lead at 3-2 when Andrew Chase scored, but were pegged back and passed when they surrendered two goals in 29 seconds, the second coming via a Chatham man-up situation that resulted from a penalty called against Summit just as Chatham scored their third goal.

Down 4-3, Chris Zanelli sniped the top left hand corner of the net from the right side with just 14 seconds remaining in the third quarter to knot the game at four apiece.

Both teams had numerous chances to win the game in regulation -- Summit's Jarrett Ross hit the left pipe --  but the fourth quarter was scoreless, and it was off to overtime.  The first, four-minute overtime period expired with both teams trading possessions and shots on goal, but there was no breakthrough.

The second overtime stanza was much like the first, and with less than a minute remaining on the clock, it appeared a third overtime period would be needed.  Chatham gained possession and Bebout was beaten in close by Gill, dropping the Hilltoppers season record to 2-1.

"We shot ourselves in the foot today" said Summit Head Coach Jim Davidson.  "Turnovers, we had chances and didn't finish, and we didn't score on the man advantage.  We had a nice win on the weekend, but you have to put that game behind you and come to play."

Next up for Summit is a matchup versus Sparta at Investors Bank Field April 3.  Face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
