Volunteer EMTs from the Summit First Aid Squad were among 12 ambulance crews requested to Port Newark this morning.

The ambulances were standing by while federal and state authorities searched a cargo ship for a container that may have had numerous stowaways on board. Since it's highly likely that these people will requite medical treatment, the Incident commander requested the ambulances from both Union and Essex county.
In addition to the Summit crew, 5 other squads from Union county responded, including volunteers from Clark, and Kenilworth, along with paid crews from Cranford, Elizabeth and Union County EMS. Other agencies on scene included the US Coast Guard, FBI, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE),  Port Authority of NY/NJ Police and NJ State Police.

At the same time, the Summit First Aid Squad received a request for assistance from neighboring Springfield for a medical emergency in that town.  Summit's on duty crew answered the call in Springfield, while off duty members Kari Phair and Jane Mahoney responded for the incident at Port Newark.
