Summit Exhibits Leadership Position at NJRPA Conference

SUMMIT, NJ - The teamwork, commitment, and expertise that contribute to the success of Summit's community programs was on full display at the 2014 New Jersey Recreation and Parks Association (NJRPA) Conference in Atlantic City.

The Summit contingent was led by Judith Leblein Josephs - Director of Community Programs (DCP), and Mark Ozoroski - Assistant Director of Community Programs, and also included Police Chief Robert Weck and Sergeant Rick Proctor, Tim Duetsch and Lou Vecchia from the Fire Department, as well as Jamie Colucci, newly elected Presiding Officer of the DCP Advisory Board.
 
The New Jersey State Firemen’s Mutual Benevolent Association’s (NJS FMBA) “Where Angels Play – Sandy Ground Project” was recognized with a Board of Trustees Award for the “Summit to the Shore” event, inspired by the “Sandy Ground Project” itself.  The project is committed to re-building 26 playgrounds in the Tri-State area, each one dedicated and named in honor of the lives lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.  Summit's Duetsch and Vecchia accepted the award.
 
Weck and Proctor presented on separate occasions at the conference, Proctor leading a presentation titled “The Active Shooter,” and Weck presenting “Verbal Judo,” a demonstration of communication methods necessary to get out of a potentially heightened situation.  Both Weck and Proctor spoke to packed rooms, giving conference-goers vital information for keeping their facilities and programs one-hundred percent safe.
 
On a lighter note, The Hilltop City, which has not one, but two recreation-based mascots -- Shark Diddy, icon of the Summit Family Aquatic Center, and Scotty McMuni, icon of the Summit Municipal Golf Course -- was the focal point of a presentation by Ringwood, NJ, representatives, who detailed how the Summit Department of Community Programs inspired that community to create and develop a mascot of their own.
 
The DCP staff explained the necessary steps for maintaining a mascot, covering everything from basic anatomy, to the overall promotion and marketing within the local community.  The session, humorous at times, was highly informational for organizations that may be considering developing a town mascot.

Colucci and Mike Fusco of SummitSoundz Entertainment both attended the conference as exhibitioners, and were awarded first place for best overall booth.  Colucci, CEO of James Colucci Enterprises LLC, demonstrated his company’s specialty in Aerial Photography and Videography.  

Investors Bank, a sponsor of several Summit DCP events. including the “Summit to the Shore”. was recognized with the Fay S. Mathewson Award for “Friend of Recreation, Parks and Conservation”. which honored Investors’ contributions to New Jersey residents and to the Recreation and Parks Profession over the years.  Kevin Cummings, Summit resident and President and CEO of Investors Bank, was in attendance to accept the award. 

David Guida, a Summit DCP staff member, took home the Agency Marketing Campaign Award for his work in the 2013 “Share the Fun!” Lip Dub Campaign.  Guida’s campaign has helped to reinforce the DCP’s “Share the Fun!” brand, featuring both the DCP Staff and the Recreation Summer Camp lip dub at the DCP’s award-winning “Screen on the Green Summer Movie Series.”  Both lip dubs were choreographed, written, directed, and filmed by Guida himself.
