The Summit Department of Community Programs was the big winner at the recent New Jersey Recreation and Park Association’s Annual Awards Night. The New Jersey Recreation and Park Association is a professional organization representing over 750 parks and recreation agencies throughout the state of New Jersey. The best and the brightest of the organization are selected through a very comprehensive selection process by the Awards Committee.
Staff of the Department of Community Programs was proud to pick up three of the most prestigious awards. “One department taking home three of the top prizes is definitely an unprecedented event,” Judith Josephs, Director of Community Programs gushed!
The 2013 Agency Showcase Award was presented to Summit Community Programs for “Outstanding achievement in the Video/Audio/Electronic Media for their Website content, in particular the Virtual Golf, Virtual Tours of the Summit Family Aquatic Center and Summit Municipal Golf Course. Jamie Colucci, a resident of Summit and a volunteer with the department worked with the DCP on the creation of these items and the DCP’s own Video and Photo Gallery functions. Jamie is the President of parksandrecreationphotos.com. His love for the services provided by Summit Community Programs motivated him to get involved. He accepted the award along with Judith Josephs, Director.
The Excellence in Visual and Cultural Arts Programming Award was presented to Summit Community Programs for their Screen on the Green Family Movie and Dance Party Series. Recognized for not only the movies presented but the total theming of each night complete with costumed characters and activities that reflect the movie content. They were selected of all the agencies offering such movies for their ability to work with corporate partners to have the series fully supported by corporate sponsors. The DCP also creates their own commercials and preview roles for each movie that highlights the evenings’ sponsors. Mike Fusco, President of New Jersey Backyard Movies and a Summit resident joined the staff to collect this coveted award.
The third award in this “hat trick” of winners was Assistant Director Mark Ozoroski being named “Professional of the Year” for the state of New Jersey. Completely surprised by this award, Mark was speechless as he accepted his award in a room filled with his colleagues and peers. Mark was singled out for his exceptional ability to schedule and support all of the athletics and sports activities in the City including management of the Summit Municipal Golf Course. Mark is a humble guy who shies away from this type of attention, however he has been named to the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame and is a new inductee to the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame for his achievements in soccer, baseball and the coaching community. Mark has served as Summit’s trainer for the Rutger’s Youth Sports Coaches Training Program as well.
On the same evening, Summit resident Brian McNany was named the recipient of the “Sutro Award” as a recent retiree from the parks and recreation field. Brian was recognized for his exceptional leadership in the field and his commitment to the parks, recreation and leisure services movement. It was a great night for the City of Summit.
