BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ – The Summit boys soccer team spoiled Gov. Livingston’s Senior Night, defeating the Highlanders, 2-0, on Tuesday under the lights at Snyder Field.
Prior to the game, Gov. Livingston head coach Bruno Somma and the Highlander fans celebrated the accomplishments of the senior class.
That was the only celebration that would take place on their side of the field.
A scoreless 39 minutes for both defenses ended in an own-goal for the Highlanders, when Ben Kinney had a ball ricochet off him and into his own net, to give Summit a 1-0 lead.
After another long stretch of scoreless play, Summit sophomore Tom Gilbert sealed the victory with the only goal credited to the Hilltopper’s offense.
In the second half at the 84th minute, Summit sophomore midfielder Tom Gilbert sealed the victory for Summit at a 2-0 lead over Governor Livingston.
Summit goalkeeper Nicholas Zachara had 11 saves on Tuesday for his third shutout in a row.
Zachara said it felt great to have three consecutive shutouts for his team and is thankful for his defense that helps him out every game.
Summit head coach Chris Yager thought his team performed well. Yager felt that his team came into the game continuing its winning momentum from their three previous games.
Somma felt that his team played well in the first half but didn’t continue playing well into the second half.
Summit is back at home on Thursday against Johnson, while GL visits Rahway to close out the regular season.
