NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The Summit Hilltoppers boys soccer team shut out New Providence, 2-0, on Tuesday at Leider Field.

Despite some early scoring chances created by Pioneer striker John Vetter and midfielder Zain Stedman, New Providence were unable to capitalize on any of those opportunities.

Summit struck first with a goal in the 26th minute on a deflection off NP goalie Michael Zamora, and that proved to be enough.

“It’s still early so we need to still improve on pretty much every aspect,” New Providence head coach Teddy Niedzielski said. “However, defense is key if we want to improve as a team.”

Summit didn’t waste much time to get back on the board.  After being unable to convert on a few chances thanks to a few of Zamora’s 13 saves, Summit cashed in with a second goal in the 56 minute.

"We need to pass the ball a bit better,” said Zamora.  “Overall, the fluidity of the team needs to improve.”

The two goals by Summit, scored by Andrew Gutierrez and Ryan Hughes, proved to be insurmountable and that was the games’ final tally.

Despite the loss, New Providence is looking forward to their next game on Thursday against rival Governor Livingston.

“Playing against a rival always adds a little extra to the game,” Zamora siad.  “But most importantly, we have to focus on winning every game that we play.”

New Providence’s record drops to 1-1 on the season while Summit picks up their first win of the early campaign, improving to 1-3-1.

Kick-off for Thursday's game is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Gov. Livingston High School.
