SUMMIT, NJ - It was a mismatch on paper.  It was a mismatch on the field.

Scoring early and often, while wholly dominating possession and virtually every statistical metric that can be applied to a lacrosse game, the Summit High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse team opened state tournament play with a 17-1 victory over Jefferson Township.

Matt Fischetti had a first quarter hat trick, Connor Murphy also had three goals, and Head Coach Jim Davidson went deep with his substitutions, giving many players on the roster significant playing time.

Summit, now 18-1 on the season and seeded number one in the tournament, will next face Mahwah April 20 at Investors Bank Field.  Face-off is set for 4 p.m.  Earlier this year, the Hilltoppers traveled to Mahwah, and beat the eight-seeded Thunderbirds 11-3 on April 24.

In addition to Fischetti's first-quarter goals, James Strabley had two goals, and Murphy scored his first of the contest to give the Hilltoppers a 6-0 lead.

The advantage ballooned to 9-0 at the half, as John Cordrey and Max Graeb goals sandwiched a beauty of an effort from defender Nick Zachara.  Zachara scooped up a ground ball, juggled it in the air several times to control possession, and motored down the middle of the field to score.

Jay Winchell replace Sam Bebout in goal to start the second half, and he got a great view of Summit stretching their lead to 17-0, on goals by Cordrey, Jake Paytas, two from Murphy, Dan Childers, Evan Kulpan, James Holzer, and Drew Mulholland.

Jefferson competed hard until the final whistle, and was rewarded with a consolation goal with less than a minute to go.  Although it appeared -- and sounded like -- a whistle had halted play before the shot, the goal got loud cheers from the visiting supporters, and warm applause from the hometown fans as well.
