SUMMIT, NJ -  The Summit Area YMCA will again offer high school students an opportunity to gain valuable and rewarding work experience during the summer, while fulfilling community service hours, through the VolunTeen Program.  The Y’s Summer VolunTeen Program, designed to inspire self-confidence and social responsibility in teens, will run from July 7-31, and is open to students who are 14–16 years old.  Applications are now being accepted.

“At the Summit Area YMCA, we nurture the potential of every youth and teen, improve the community’s health and well-being, and provide opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Inspiring social responsibility is at the core of the Y’s mission,” commented Janet Smith, Vice-President of Human Resources of the Summit Area YMCA.  “It is the time and talent of volunteers that make a difference in the lives of those in the community, and this program allows teens to experience that first-hand.”

Through the program, high school students work flexible three- to four-hour shifts between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., three to four days each week at a local non-profit.  Locations include the Summit YMCA, SAGE Eldercare, The Summit Free Public Library, and the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey.

Teens interested in participating in the VolunTeen Program must complete an application and submit a letter of recommendation.  The application deadline is Friday, April 18, and space is limited.  Following application submission, teens will participate in an interview with the program selection committee.  Once accepted, a program orientation session will be offered.

For more information or to apply for the VolunTeen Program, contact Lana Gantner at lana.gantner@thesay.org, or 908 / 273-4270, ext.3202.  Applications can be picked up at the Summit YMCA, located at 67 Maple Street.
