SUMMIT, NJ – On Saturday, November 16, the Summit Area YMCA hosted Laugh Out Loud (LOL): An Evening of Comic Relief, a fundraising event that was held at The Grand Summit Hotel. The comedy fundraiser featured New York City comedians Adam Sank, who hails from Summit, Bryan Scott McFadden, and Ophira Eisenberg.

As a leading, community cause-driven organization, the Summit Area YMCA focuses on nurturing the potential of youth, promoting healthy living, and inspiring social responsibility. All funds raised through The Laugh Out Loud event contribute to the Y’s ability to support the community by through financial assistance and subsidized health and wellness programs for children, adults and seniors. In fact, in 2012, the Summit Area YMCA provided more than $1.2 million in Y Cares Financial Assistance, as well as free and subsidized programming for individuals and families who were unable to afford memberships, childcare, or summer camp.

“This event brought our community together and united them in laughter,” commented Darrell Johnson, President and CEO of the Summit Area YMCA. “The Laugh Out Loud fundraiser lifts the spirits of not just the event guests, but also of all the individuals and families whom the Y is able to help as a result of the funds raised.”

This year, the Y raised over $124,000 through the event, which is 50% more than last year. The event drew nearly 250 attendees who enjoyed an evening of comedy interspersed with a live auction that included items such as an adventure trip, a golf package, a NFL Giants game with tailgate, cooking lessons with dinner party, in-home wine tasting, a pastry chef for a day, an evening in Times Square, all generously donated by local vendors. Additionally, the Y offered opportunities for guests to donate to Y scholarships that include Summer Camp for underprivileged children, Memberships for military families, Memberships for 7th graders, and the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program for cancer patients.

Janet Russell, Vice President of Development at the Summit Area YMCA, remarked, “The support and dedication of our sponsors, our committee, and our volunteers is a true testament of their belief in the work the Y is doing and of the Y’s mission to strengthen the community.”

The Summit Area YMCA is grateful for the generous support of Laugh Out Loud sponsors, including Lead Sponsors: Investors Bank and Merck Pharmaceuticals, as well as Event Sponsors: Smythe Volvo, Sum It Up Lacrosse, Sysco, and Batavia Café. The event committee, led by Charlotte Bashforth as Event Chair and Laura Gump who is on the Board of Trustees, along with the contribution of over 60 volunteers and staff added to the overall success of the event.
