Summit Area Public Foundation Supports SAGE’s Meals On Wheels

Older adults in Union, Essex, Morris and Somerset Counties are receiving proper nutrition and friendly volunteer check-ins from SAGE Eldercare’s Meals On Wheels (MOW) program thanks to a generous grant of $55K from the Summit Area Public Foundation.
“We are very grateful to the Summit Area Public Foundation for their generous support of our Meals On Wheels service. The grant will allow us to continue to provide a daily hot meal to older adults in the area, as well as provide additional support to our Portable Pantry, Small Home Repair Service, Bill Paying Service, and Grocery Shopping & Errand Service,” stated Julie Reich, Acting Executive Director of SAGE Eldercare.
Through Meals On Wheels, Grocery Shopping & Errand Service, Bill Paying Service, Small Home Repair Service, and the Portable Pantry, SAGE Eldercare works to support the overall well-being of vulnerable older adults who choose to remain living independently in their own homes.
During 2012, SAGE’s 600 volunteers delivered approximately 36,000 meals to 250 clients in 11 towns located in Essex, Morris and Union Counties. The MOW program at SAGE was established in 1966 and was one of the first meal delivery programs in New Jersey. People who are over the age of 60 are eligible for the service. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday and can be scheduled for a short term or indefinitely.
The Shopping & Errand Service has grown from three clients in 1998 to about 60 annually. Each year, volunteers shop and deliver more than 1,000 orders and buy more than $70,000 worth of groceries. They also pick up and deliver laundry to and from a local Laundromat and run errands to the post office, dry cleaners and other places upon request.
The Bill Paying Service assists older adults who are able to make responsible decision about their financial affairs, but who may be physically impaired, have a debilitating illness or have recently lost their spouse who was the sole manager of the household finances. SAGE’s Home Repair Service helps older adults with repairs so that they can continue to live safely in their own homes. The Portable Pantry supplies and distributes 1,250 non-perishable meal boxes/bags to the most impoverished home-bound seniors living in Union, Essex, and Morris Counties, who are at risk of hunger and poor nutrition.
Summit Area Public Foundation (SAPF) is a non-profit community foundation that fosters philanthropy in the Summit, NJ area by identifying local needs and offering donors flexible ways to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors. SAPF administers three main types of funds: general unrestricted, restricted-purpose, and donor-advised, all of which support not-for-profit agencies in Summit and nearby communities. They also award scholarships to students attending Summit, NJ schools.

Both provide essential funding that supports the organization’s programs and services for seniors in the community.
