SUMMIT, NJ - The Summit YMCA 14U Basketball Team has captured its second consecutive state basketball title, beating Madison, 55-43, at Drew University.

Led by head coach Kareem Douglas, and assistant coaches Mike Bruner and Toni Harrell, the team -- known as "Braveheart" -- features a mix of seventh- and eighth-grade players.

The Summit 14U "Braveheart" Team:

Daniel Baker
Jack Barletta
Jack Carey
Ryan Elliott
John Gerard
Finbar McCormick
Reid Pierotti
Christina Richson
Alex Schachne
Malcolm Sidebottom
Kyle Standing
Will Stevens
Jackson Tyler
Liam Wolfe

In the tournament, Summit received a first-round bye, and won its second-round game easily before falling in the next round, in overtime, to Madison, a game in which they led in the final minutes. Forced to play an extra game in the double-elimination tournament, Summit beat East Orange to advance to the final, a rematch with Madison.

Summit fell behind early, but point guard Alex Schachne was a force gong to the basket and hitting from the outside, and Jack Carey was a force on the glass. Taking the lead in the second quarter, the advantage stretched to double digits at halftime. In the second half, Summit got timely baskets from John Gerard, Jack Carey and Jack Barletta to maintain the cushion whenever Madison drew closer.

This is the second championship for Summit this season, as they also won a league title competing simultaneously at Hoop Heaven in Whippany.
