SUMMIT, NJ - Summit-based Student/Partner Alliance will be among the honorees when Greater Newark Conservancy hosts its “Making Our City Bloom Gala,” on May 15.

The event, which benefits the Conservancy’s programs and services in the areas of environmental education, community greening and gardening, nutrition, job training and environmental justice, will be hosted by the Community FoodBank of New Jersey at its facility in Hillside.

Other honorees include the Horizon Foundation of New Jersey, Julien X. Neals, Esq., Business Administrator, City of Newark, the late Diane Schwarz, South Orange, NJ, James Porter, Mendham, NJ, Earl Scott, Office of Reentry, City of Newark and the late Bakbakkar Yehudah, SWAG Garden, Newark, NJ.

Margaret Momber, Executive Director, will accept the Joan D. Murray Volunteerism award on behalf of the Student/Partner Alliance, a non-sectarian, non-profit organization offering concerned individuals, corporations, and foundations a way to help economically disadvantaged but determined young people from New Jersey’s inner cities obtain their high school diplomas from a local private school, through a combination of financial and personal support.  Members volunteer with the Conservancy in various community greening / urban farming activities.  The award is named for the late Joan D. Murray, formerly of Morristown, who was an active member of the Morristown Garden Club and a longtime supporter of the Conservancy’s programs.

The Community FoodBank of New Jersey’s founder, President and CEO, Kathleen DiChiara, was on the founding board of Greater Newark Conservancy. To honor the FoodBank’s mission, guests are asked to bring a donation on the night of the gala of canned goods like tuna, soups, chili or stews, plastic jars of peanut butter or boxes of pasta, potatoes, rice and cereal.
