SHORT HILLS, NJ - A powerful storm knocked down a utility pole on Chatham Road on Thursday afternoon causing power outages to homes in the area as well as at the Glenwood School.

Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) went to work to correct the situation, but residents in the area were told to expect rolling power outages during the repairs. Temporary lighting was set up at the Short Hills Train Station for commuters, although train service was not affected. Chatham Road was closed between Baltusrol Avenue and Woodland Road while crews worked to replace the pole.

Schools Superintendent Dr. James Crisfield said via email that Glenwood School will be open for a full day on Friday, with or without power.

"We have a fire watch at the ready, 24/7, so the immediate safety of all building occupants is assured," Crisfield said. "There is sufficient natural light in most classrooms, but the building will be dark in certain parts. Dr. Jasin has a good plan to avoid those sections of the building as need be. Water service is uninterrupted, so the water fountains and toilets will be working as normal."

The work that needs to be done to replace the pole and connect the wires will force JCP&L to create intentional outages around Chatham Road and the Short Hills Train Station.

According to JCP&L, approximately 70 homes and businesses were without power due to the damaged utility pole. Most of those home were slated to be restored late last night, but the repairs could continue into Friday morning.
