The competition is open for New Jersey’s best, commercially feasible business ideas.

Celebrating its tenth anniversary, the 2013 New Jersey Business Idea Competition is open to all high school students (grades 9 – 12). The deadline for applications is February 25, and the winners will be announced and honored on the evening of April 5, 2013, at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College at Florham, Madison, NJ.

The competition divides the state into three regions: north (Bergen, Passaic, Sussex, Morris, Essex, and Warren Counties); central (Hunterdon, Somerset, Union, Middlesex, Mercer, and Hudson Counties); and south (Monmouth, Ocean, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Atlantic, Salem, Cumberland, and Cape May Counties).

Each region will recognize 4 finalists and 8 semi-finalists who will be awarded $250 and $100, respectively. In addition, a grand prize winner will be chosen from each region and receive an additional $250 each plus a special prize from the New York Jets. By leveraging social media, all winners will have the opportunity to double their prize money by getting their friends to vote for their idea. Therefore, regional winners can win up to $1000, finalists up to $500 and semifinalists up to $200, with a total of over $13,500 awarded in cash and prizes. Additional prizes will be awarded to ideas pertaining to sustainability and free 3D printing and workshops for product ideas.

James C. Barrood, Executive Director of the nationally recognized Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurship at FDU said, “The objective is to foster an entrepreneurial mindset among New Jersey’s high school students. We want to recognize those who develop the brightest and most commercially feasible ideas. They are, after all, the future business leaders of our state.”

The program is administered by the Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurship, part of FDU’s Silberman College of Business. In recent years, the center’s undergraduate program has been ranked as high as 7th nationwide by the Princeton Review and its graduate program, 19th.

The competition will be judged by the faculty of the Rothman Institute, part of FDU’s Silberman College of Business. Sponsors include the Gateway Group One, WCEC, the New York Jets, Chase, and the Rita Allen Foundation.
