SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ – Health inspectors have thrown proverbial water over the coals of the free barbecue offered at The Stage House Tavern (366 Park Ave.).

When the restaurant came up for its yearly inspection on Tuesday, the health inspector informed the eatery that its coal-fueled grills were releasing too much smoke into the air and causing air pollution. Owners are currently working with a filtration systems expert to amend the situation and bring back the BBQ.

“We use charcoal and have all the necessary permits,” said Lauren Williams, a manager at Stage House Tavern. “We hope to have it up and running as soon as possible. We can’t offer the BBQ again until the health inspector gives the okay.”

Stage House Tavern offers its free daily BBQ from 5 to 10 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The menu includes barbecued ribs, pulled pork, chicken thighs, brisket, and sweet and hot sausage.
