As Winter slowly gives way to Spring, Doctors Express Urgent Care in South Plainfield would like to briefly address the following health items that have proven to be topical this time of year.

·         Pneumonia: Pneumonia is an infection that affects the lungs.  Symptoms of pneumonia include a cough, fever and difficulty breathing.  These symptoms can range from mild to severe.  Severe pneumonia is most common amongst the elderly and those in poor health.  A diagnosis can be made with an examination, chest x-ray or blood test.  Pneumonia is a treatable illness.  Antibiotics may be used for bacterial pneumonia; and may even be prescribed in the event of a viral infection to prevent complications.  If you are diagnosed with pneumonia, get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids.  In order to alleviate cough symptoms, take an over the counter cough medicine.  If necessary, your doctor can prescribe a stronger cough medicine.  Since pneumonia may be common after illnesses such as the cold, flu, measles, or chicken pox, avoid contact with people who have contracted these illnesses.  Always wash your hands or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

·         Allergies: As flowers start to blossom, those suffering from seasonal allergies begin their annual ritual of allergy symptoms.  Over 35 million Americans suffer from seasonal springtime allergies.  Springtime allergies are typically caused by pollen. When pollen particles enter the system of an allergic person, the immune system treats the pollen as it would bacteria, viruses, or other foreign organisms.  This triggers an immune response that can cause symptoms such as runny nose, itchy eyes, and sneezing.  When pollen counts are high, sufferers are more likely to experience symptoms.  If you find yourself suffering from allergy symptoms in the springtime, you most likely have seasonal allergies.  Make sure to see a doctor.  Your doctor may refer you to an allergist who can treat the symptoms with a variety of medications. These medicines can be antihistamines, decongestants, eye drops and/or steroid nasal sprays.  Some medications include a combination of antihistamine and a decongestant.

·         Travel Medicine: If your travel plans include international travel, now is the time to inquire about travel medicine.  Thinking about traveling in the spring or summer? It is a good idea to visit a doctor at least six weeks before your trip to discuss vaccinations that you may need.  A board-certified physician can discuss your itinerary with you and administer any required vaccinations.
