DUNELLEN, NJ - The Spotswood High School Chargers are making a habit out of heart-stopping victories.
This time, the Chargers allowed Dunellen to take a fourth-quarter lead with two minutes to play, only to have a kickoff return by Chase Fee and then an interception return by Steve Sommer, both for touchdowns, en route to a thrilling 29-19 victory over the Destroyers.
The scoring opened with Dunellen taking the opening kickoff straight down the field in five plays, and after the extra point was blocked, the score was 6-0. The Chargers then drove downfield, but settled for a field goal by Conner McCloskey to cut the lead to 6-3. The running back tandem of Chase Fee and Jack Dalrymple then took over, as Dalrymple ran for 30 yards, and then Fee went for a 52-yard touchdown run to give the Chargers a lead they would hold until halftime, 10-6.
As has been the case all year long, the Chargers dominated on the ground, rushing for close to 275 yards. Fee rushed for 175 on the day, and Dalrymple for an additional 90.
The teams battled back and forth in the scoreless thrid quarter, and then seemingly took control with about 9:00 to play, when Sommer scored on a 24 yard touchdown pass fromm QB C.J. O'Connnor, giving the Chargers a 16-6 lead. But the Destroyers proved a stout opponent, and a costly personal foul penalty on fourth down by Spotswood gave Dunellen life, who scored with five minutes left to cut the Charger lead to 16-13. After Spotswood was unable to sustain their drive, they punted back to the Destroyers, who took possession near midfield, and then went on a touchdown march, taking a 19-16 lead with just over two minutes to play.
It was then that the fireworks started, as Fee took the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for the leading score, and after kicking off with a 23-19 lead, Sommer made his pick, romping 40 yards for the clinching touchdown and a 29-19 victory.
The 7-0 Chargers can clinch the GMC Blue Division title with a victory against South River on Saturday November 2 at home. Kickoff is at 2:00 PM.
