SPF Raiders Sports Review for Sept. 16-20

SCOTCH PLAINS/ FANWOOD, NJ -The Scotch Plains Fanwood High School Boys Soccer team lost two out of their three games this week. The Raiders lost their first game of the season against Westfield on Sept. 17.
Alik Morgan from Westfield scored the winning goal in double overtime. Scotch Plains Fanwood got back on the winning track, defeating Elizabeth, 3-2. James Murphy scored two goals and Zach Lipshitz scored a goal for the Raiders. Christian Zazzali and Dan Babis had the two assists for SPF. The team couldn’t continue the success; losing against Hillsborough, 2-1, on Sept. 21. Brian Rubin scored the only goal for SPF off Justin Rodriguez’s assist. The loss dropped the Raiders record to 4-2. They will look to rebound against Union on Sept. 24.
Girls Soccer: The Lady Raiders started off the week beating Westfield, 2-0 on Sept. 17. Katherine Cunningham and Kelly Yeager scored for Scotch Plains-Fanwood. On Sept. 19, the girls’ soccer team defeated Union, 3-1. Tori Baliatico, Jodie Cornwell and Kelly Yeager all scored for the Raiders. Baliatico, Katherine Cunningham and Paige Heiden had the assists for SPF. With the two victories this week, the girls’ soccer team is still undefeated and has a record of 5-0. Their next game will be at Bayonne on Sept. 23.
Football: The Scotch Plains Fanwood High School’s football team lost their second game of the season against Hillside, 28-24. Starting quarterback for SPF, Emendo Thomas rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries in the game. Kobe White returned the kickoff to start the second half for a touchdown. The Raiders had a lead in the fourth quarter, but Hillside scored 14 points to take the lead and the game. With the loss, the team’s record drops to 1-1 and will play against Rahway on Sept. 28.
Girls Gymnastics: The gymnastics team competed against Westfield on September 16 and lost 104.5 to 101.6. Kacie Bumiller took the Vault for SPF with a score of 9.3. The Raiders lost their next meet against Johnson 101.575 to 100.675 on September 18th. Bumiller took the Vault for the second straight meet with a score of 9.15. Scotch Plains Fanwood ended the losing streak when they dominated their meet against Piscataway on September 19 winning 102.9 to 67.705. Bumiller took the Vault for the third straight meet along with winning the Uneven Bars and Floor Exercise. Maddie McNihol took the Balance Beam for SPF with a score of 8.775. On September 23, Scotch Plains will be at Union for their next meet.
Girls Tennis: The girls’ tennis team had three matches this week but couldn’t pull off a victory, going winless this week. The team lost to Gov. Livingston on September 16, 4-1. Lizzie Kaminoff and Sophie TumSuden won second doubles for Scotch Plains Fanwood. SPF lost to Westfield, 5-0, on September 17. The tennis team’s record is 0-5 but will look to get their first win at Ridge on September 23.
Girls Volleyball: The girls’ volleyball team won two of their three matches this week. They started off beating Rahway 2 games to 0 on September 17. The Raiders won their next match against Summit on September 19, 2 games to 0. In their final game of the week, the volleyball team faced rival Westfield on September 20, but could not come out with the win, losing 2 games to 0. After this week, the volleyball team’s record is 4-2. This week, Brooke Enners led the team in kills with 25, Caroline Yessman led the team with eight aces and Shannon Reilly led the team with 16 digs. Scotch Plains Fanwood plays their next game at home against Bayonne on September 23rd.
Boys Cross Country: The cross country team won their first meet against Elizabeth on September 17th. Alex Livernois ran the fastest time for SPF in the 5133 meter run with a time of 17 minutes 30 seconds. Ben Evans had the second faster time with a time of 17 minutes and 51 seconds. The Raiders also competed in the NJCTC Bernie Magee Class Meet on September 21st. Livernois had the best time with 16 minutes 47 seconds in the 5,250 meter run and placed 6th. The boys next meet is a tri meet against Linden and Elizabeth on September 24th.
Girls Cross Country: Just like the boys team, the girls cross country team beat Elizabeth on September 17th. Kailyn Reilly ran the fastest time for SPF with a time of 21 minutes 37 seconds in the 5133 meter run. Jessica Banasiak ran the second fastest time finishing in 22 minutes 29 seconds. The girls competed in the NJCTC Bernie Magee Class meet on September 21st where Reilly ran the fastest time again for the team this time finishing the 5,250 meter run in 22 minutes 4 seconds. Their next meet is a tri meet against Linden and Elizabeth on September 24th.
Trevor Skanes is a senior at Scotch Plains Fanwood High School and has a passion for the field of journalism. This is his third year on staff at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School’s newspaper, The Fanscotian. Trevor was the sports editor last year and now is one of the editors-in-chiefs for the newspaper. Last year, Trevor won an award from GSSPA, for best news story in division B in the state of New Jersey. For the school year 2013-2014, Trevor will be the sports editor of the Scotch Plains Edition of the Alternative Press and will write the SPFHS Sports Wrap Up every week.
