Special Needs Youth Baseball Night and Summer Recreation Programs

Do you know a child who would enjoy participating in a fun, noncompetitive nighttime baseball game?  Then join us at the 5th annual TryCAN Baseball Under the Lights, hosted by Summit Community Programs and TryCAN, takes place Friday, June 20 at Jefferson School Field at 110 Ashwood Avenue in Summit, with a tailgate starting at 6:30pm and game at 7:15pm. Join us as family, friends, teen peer volunteers and coaches cheer on the baseball talents of our special kids.  Special thanks to the Summit Junior Baseball, Sharkey’s Snack Shack, the Summit FMBA, the Summit Fire Department, Thompson Sporting Goods, and the Summit Elks Lodge for their generous support of this event and past events.  For more information or to RSVP or volunteer contact Kevin at summitcan@gmail.com or 908-277-2932 x13.

Children ages 5-9 who may be struggling a bit or reluctant readers and could use a little support, encouragement while getting practice during summer down time can sign up for the summer Reading Camp.  Children will use games, books, music and other activities to improve reading skills, while capitalizing on strengths to instill self-confidence and a Can-do! attitude.  Kids work on decoding, phonics, comprehension and choosing books for pleasure reading.  We work with each student depending on what level she/he is starting at.  Sarah Hanson, Certified Teacher is the instructor. The program runs 4:45-5:30 pm three days a week – Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays (July 1– July 24).  You can register for one day a week, two days or three days. 

In Summer Fun with Art, children will be able to engage in hands-on art experiences while socializing with peers.  Children will create utilize various art skills such as drawing and painting, while working with sensory-based materials.  Children will take turns and share with one another, develop fine and gross motor skills, and learn to work together in a group. 

Led by Cindy Hamilton, Certified Art Instructor and Art Therapist. Class runs Wednesdays 6:00 – 6:45 (July 9, 16, 23, 30).  Contact summitcan@gmail.com for more information.

In Music with Jammin’ Jenn, children (ages 4-8) engage in singing, movement and instrument exploration in a fun and lively setting to increase body awareness, awareness of others, attention and listening skills and encourage a love of music.  Class runs Thursdays 6:15 - 6:45 pm (July 10, 17, 24, 31).  Jenn Goodman, Certified Music Therapist is the instructor.

TryCAN is a collaboration of local communities offering an array of recreation programs for youth with special needs or those who need special accommodation. There are no resident fees involved and all are welcome!
