FANWOOD, NJ - Fanwood Police Chief Richard Trigo issued a written warning to residents regarding a spate of thefts from unlocked vehicles in the Northwest quadrant of the borough.
“All the entered vehicles were unlocked and movable property was removed from the vehicles. Residents are encouraged to lock their cars and contact the Fanwood Police Department immediately if they should observe any suspicious persons, vehicles or activity,: the warning said.
When asked whether these break-ins are the result of the economic downturn, Trigo said no.
“Fanwood is a safe area, but residents still need to be responsible and careful and they need to lock their doors,” Trigo said. "This sort of thing happens sporadically in suburban areas."
He clarified that, although these are termed break-ins because property was stolen, there vehicles were not actually broken into, because the doors were all unlocked, allowing easy access.
"If people would just lock their cars, this would not be happening," Trigo concluded.
