SPARTA, NJ - Peer Leaders from Sparta Middle School went to Mohawk Avenue School in December to work with the kindergarten students. The middle school student leaders have been working around a theme of  "Connect with Kindness" this year. The seventh- and eighth-grade students, with advisor Cindy Reigstad, brought a lesson called "Bucket Filling" to Sparta's youngest students.

Bucket Filling is a lesson on being a good and nice person, always treating each other with kindnessnice and doing the right thing even when no one is looking.  The leaders read a book and followed up with a hands-on activity with the students.

The Sparta Middle School Peer Leaders have participated in other activities in the first half of the school year including making pillowcases for the Goryeb Children's Hospital at Morristown Medical Center. The students also attended a countywide summit of other peer leader groups.

Working with their fellow 6th, 7th and 8th grade students the Peer Leaders have painted motivational quotes throughout the middle school building.  Additionally, they are active members in Rachel's Challenge, an anti-bullying effort named for the first Columbine shooting victim, in which students are challenged to "start a chain reaction of kindness."
