SPARTA, NJ- The home opener for the Sparta varsity Ice Hockey team ended in a disappointing 3-2 loss to Pequannock High School.

Pequannock scored first less than three minutes into the first period.  That goal was matched by Sparta's Captain Matthew Mayer, with 3:51 left in the first.

Pequannock took advantage of two Sparta penalties to drive the score to 3-1 in the second period.  That score held until the game was almost complete.  With only 3.4 seconds left in the final period, the freshmen Erickson brothers scored.  Brandon put it in the net with an assist by Connor for a 3-2 final.

Last year Sparta High School moved to the more competitive Morris County Secondary Schools Ice Hockey League.  Sparta's home ice is at Skylands Ice World in Stockholm.
