Sparta High School Students of the Month for January

SPARTA, NJ- Steven Schels, Social Studies Department Supervisor and teacher presented the Sparta High School Students of the Month for January at the board of edcation meeting last week.

Matty Putnam was recognized by the Mathematics department for her great work ethic.  While she currently has an A+ average in her math class, she takes the time to seek extra help when a topic or question proves to be a challenge.  Putnam, in turn, assists her peers when they are unsure.

Environmental Science teacher Lara Lovett says Molly Sullivan was nominated as a "great participant and leader of class discussions, elevating the class with her high level questions and enthusiasm."  Lovett says, "Molly has demonstrated great effort and excellent academic success and has been recommended for Honors Biology next year."

The English department  is represented by Jake Alben.  He has been recognized for being a hard working student with a great work ethic, character and integrity.   In addition, he has overcome many obstacles in his life and still perseveres with a smile on his face.  Alben's teacher explains, "He has recently demonstrated leadership qualities during our expository unit by helping his group to stay on task.  He helped them to understand tone and theme in The Glass Castle.  He volunteered to be the spokesperson for his group on several occasions because he had a thorough understanding of what he read."

Called a go-getter and a phenomenal student by her teacher, Kaya Proctor is the student of the month from the art department.  Her teacher also says, "her work is amazing."  Proctor also made big contribution to the eight grade Parent Night program.

Matthew Rotondi is the Music department nominee.  Rotondi is an oboe player in the Wind Ensemble.  His teacher explains that he has improved very much in the last year but more importantly, Rotondi is a role model; hard working and dedicated. 

In Physical Education Andrew Taveras frequently asks to lead warm-ups and makes the class more enjoyable for everyone.  His teacher says he is a great student.  Even when Taveras was injured and could not play, he helped to set up and referee.

In the area of Technology, Career and Consumer Science Eric Reinhard is an A+ marketing student.  He has been in the marketing program for three years, working in the school store and competing in DECA competitions.  In that time Reinhard has won regional and state DECA competition awards each year.  Last year Reinhard won second place overall in the state and competed in the national competition. 

As a junior in French II, Dominique Cagno has been nominated from the World Language department.  Her teacher says, "She has always performed well without any excuses and has an incredible outlook and attitude towards learning.  She has some struggles in French I at the beginning of the year but this year has really turned things around."  Cango is now not only an A student but is traveling to France this summer on the school trip.

The Social Studies department is represented by Eric Lesch.  He has improved his grades and his attitude during class.  Lesch's teacher explains that recently his class participation has been outstanding, he completes all his work and overall, has improved so much in social studies.  Lesch's teacher says, "I nominate him as student of the month for his positive attitude and strong academic motivation."

Angelique Donati was selected for the Principal's Award this month.  Donati has a rigorous schedule including AP Biology, Medical Biology and Honors Calculus and is currently ranked 25 in the senior class.  Donati is also active in the school community.  She participated in Glee night as a soloist and in an ensemble.  Donati has a lead role in the spring theater production of High School Musical.  Principal Daniel Johnson shares, "At every interaction, Angelique is smiling and friendly.  She assists other students and teachers whenever possible.  She exemplifies the spirit of a true Spartan."
