SUMMIT, NJ - TryCAN, a collaboration of communities offering recreation programs for children with special needs or those who need special accommodation, has space available in two, unique programs.

The Mask Making Art Group allows children to enjoy hands-on mask-making, including designing, making, and painting their own masks.  At the end of the sessions, each child will have her/his very own mask to take home and show off, while having an opportunity to improve socialization, taking turns, fine and gross motor skills, and working with others in a group.  Led by Cindy Hamilton, Certified Art Instructor and Art Therapist, the class is held on Wednesdays, 4 - 4:45 p.m.

The Reading Club is designed for children ages 5-9 to help struggling or reluctant readers experience the joys of reading, in a completely embarrassment and failure free setting.

The class capitalizes on strengths, instills self-confidence, and fosters a Can-Do attitude to help children read more confidently.  Led by Sarah Hanson, Certified Teacher and former recreational professional, participants work on core skills depending on each child's needs (such as decoding, word attack, comprehension, making appropriate reading choices) using books, games, music, and other fun activities.  The Reading Club is held on Wednesdays, 4:45 - 5:30 p.m.,May 13, 20, 27, and June 10.  Price is $52 for the four sessions.  A Reading Camp will also run during July.

Both Hamilton and Hanson have extensive experience working with students with unique needs.  In addition, trained and experienced teen Peer Mentors will be at every class to help the students participate, learn, and have fun.  Classes are held at the Summit Community Center, 100 Morris Avenue.  Contact Summit Community Programs at 908 / 277-2932 to register, or to learn more or learn about other recreation programs TryCAN offers.

Registration is also available online at https://register.communitypass.net/summit.  There are no non-resident fees, and all welcome.
