EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – South Plainfield girls field hockey team defeated East Brunswick to win the 2013 Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament championship.
Jessie Bishop scored the lone goal of the game with 1:12 left to give the Tigers the victory. The game was a hard-fought see-saw affair the first 58 minutes as both teams had limited scoring chances. South Plainfield goalie Courtney Ross had a few outstanding saves for south Plainfield.
The winning goal developed when senior Shannon Hughes drew a corner with 1.17 left in the game. Bishop received the pass shot and then banged in a rebound with 1:12 left for the victory.
South Plainfield has now won back-to-back GMC Championships and three out of the last four titles.
South Plainfield coach Cheryl Hughes said, "We knew coming in East Brunswick would do what they could to take away Jess and Shannon, but we were so determined to win it on their field. Jess came through big time like I knew she could and Courtney was amazing in goal. What a great team victory, especially after losing so many seniors off last year’s team. This group really wanted to prove they could win one themselves and they did it. I couldn't be more proud".
