SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The South Plainfield Library Board of Trustees announced they will be holding the official groundbreaking for the Library expansion on July 30, 2014.  The ceremony is scheduled to take place at 7:00pm in front of the Library building.  Mayor Matthew P. Anesh has volunteered to read a story on the building of a new library to a large group of school aged children.

At the June 10, 2014 Library Board meeting the Library Board awarded a $2,619,000 contract to Structural Concepts Inc., of Ocean, New Jersey for the addition and alterations to the South Plainfield Free Public Library.  Library Board President Darlene Cullen said “this is an exciting day for the residents and youth of South Plainfield.  I’m very proud to be part of the team that was able to finally get the Library project over the hump and off the drawing board.  A number of former Trustees put a lot of sweat and tears into this project, and we are glad to be delivering on their dreams.

The South Plainfield Free Public Library was built in 1964.  The day the Library opened its doors it was deemed to be too small for South Plainfield based upon its population.  Over the past decade there have been a number of Library ideas and initiatives, but none have gained enough traction to get off the ground.

The $2,619,000 addition is being funded by Library savings and grants and bequests for the Library.  Construction is expected to last 18 months, and the Library is anticipating a six week construction closure to the facility.

Mayor Matthew P. Anesh said “when I became Mayor, there were certain projects that were priorities for me, the Library expansion being at the top of the list.  The expanded Library will be a facility that all residents of the Borough can take pride in and will enhance the Borough’s reputation that it is a great place to live and raise a family.”
