South Plainfield Girls Down Bishop Ahr in Basketball Opener

EDISON, NJ –The South Plainfield Girls’ Basketball Team opened the 2013/2014 season with a 57-52 victory over rival Bishop Ahr. The game was a closely fought contest with neither team building a lead greater than single digits.
Bishop Ahr led South Plainfield 22-21 at the half, and South Plainfield took a 39-38 lead heading into the final quarter. South Plainfield’s Amanda Harper would make back to back three point shots to start the fourth quarter, and South Plainfield would never relinquish their lead. Harper would go on to score 12 points in total. Nine of those points would be scored in the fourth quarter.
Bishop Ahr’s Lauren Barlow would bring Bishop Ahr within two at 52-54 late in the fourth, but South Plainfield’s Shannon Hughes would put in a rebound, and make two foul shots in the final minute to ice the game for the Tigers.
Bishop Ahr’s Jenna Harsh would lead all scorers with 21 points. South Plainfield’s leading scorer was Kate McLaughlin who pumped in 16 points including three for four from the three point mark. South Plainfield’s Amanda Harper and Shannon Hughes both scored twelve points, and Sarah Cargill scored 10 to round out South Plainfield’s double digit scorers.
