SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ -  South Plainfield’s Chris Mathis scored 23 points, and the South Plainfield Tigers held off a late fourth-quarter surge to defeat the Spotswood Chargers, 50-45, in an opening night Blue Division boys basketball matchup.

The Tigers took a two-point lead midway through the first quarter and they would never trail the Chargers for the rest of the game. South Plainfield led Spotswood, 22-18, at the half, and never led Spotswood by more than seven points in the tightly played contest.

In addition to pumping in 23 points, Mathis led all players with seven rebounds.  South Plainfield guard Roemello Monroe chipped in eight points, and controlled much of the offense for the Tigers.
