NEWARK, NJ - Isaiah L. Greene, 24, of Newark, was sentenced to 40 years in New Jersey State Prison by Superior Court Judge Michael L. Ravin, for the December 2011 carjacking and sexual assault of a 21-year-old woman in South Orange, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray.
At approximately 2 p.m. on Dec. 10, 2011, Greene approached the victim as she was getting into her car at the South Orange train station. He acted as if he had a gun in his pocket and demanded her valuables. She handed over her iPhone and cash. He then made her drive the car as he sat in the passenger seat.
“As she drove, he fondled her breast and put his hands down her pants. Fearing the incident was going to escalate, she made the decision to crash into a sheriff police vehicle in Vailsburg Park in South Orange and jump out of the car,” said the statement Murray released on Thursday.
Greene fled the scene but was arrested a few hours later. In April of 2013, he was convicted of first degree carjacking, robbery, criminal restraint and aggravated sexual contact.
Assistant Prosecutor Brian Matthews, who tried the case, urged Judge Ravin to sentence Greene to at least 50 years in state prison, saying Greene has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unwilling to live by the rules of society. As a juvenile, Greene had 15 petitions filed against him and as an adult has had three felony convictions prior to this most recent case.
“We pushed for a lengthy sentence because this defendant has demonstrated time and again that he is not fit to live in society. Every time he has been given a chance, he shows he is unable to conform his behavior to the standards of society,’’ said Matthews. “He must be incarcerated to protect the public.’’
Judge Ravin sentenced Greene to 40 years, which will make him eligible for parole after he serves 32 years. He was given 776 days credit for the time he was incarcerated at the Essex County Correctional Facility.
