South Orange Salt Supply in Good Shape, Official Says

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – The village has a stockpile of road salt because of careful management by Director of Public Works Tom Michetti, officials said Thursday.

“I’d like to give kudos to Tommy because he’s done a fantastic job,” village Administrator Barry Lewis Jr. said. “His stewardship of the salt, making sure we were ahead of the game – I think a lot of people were short-sighted.”

Lewis said a lot of towns tried to save money by not buying more until they needed it. As a result, towns that ran out of salt during or after the last snowstorm are paying $150 a ton. South Orange pays $56 a ton.

“Tommy has been very proactive,” he said. “We keep that dome packed to the ceiling as opposed to waiting until the last minute.” South Orange has more salt on order, Lewis said, but even without that delivery has enough for two more snow “events.”

In addition, South Orange uses brine to pre-treat streets, which saves on salt.

The village refused requests from other towns for salt, but Lewis noted that one or more barges of salt were expected in the next day or two, which will replenish supplies.
