SOUTH ORANGE, NJ -- The South Orange Rescue Squad is reviving its cadet program, and classes begin Sunday, Oct. 13.

Created in 1988, this program provides an “opportunity for qualified students to learn firsthand about emergency medical services," said Dan Cohen, a former cadet and now captain of the Rescue Squad. "At the same time, the program provides a source of future emergency medical technicians for the Rescue Squad and provides additional crew members to assist on ambulance calls.”

Candidates must be between 14 and 18 years old. In order to join, candidates must have the permission of their parents, be a resident of South Orange or Maplewood, be in good standing with the community and in school, and must be in good health and physical condition.

This week’s orientation and first training session will run from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and will be conducted at the Rescue Squad building located on 4 Third St. (at Third and Sloan) in South Orange. Training sessions will run every Sunday night from 6:30-8:30 and for six to seven weeks.
