SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – The Village and the Jersey Animal Coalition are working on a settlement that will keep them out of New Jersey Superior Court after the shelter sued the local government, citing an unwarranted and illegal eviction order.

Details of the agreement were not immediately available through official channels, but the Village Green reported that the village is ready to drop all of its complaints against the shelter if all facility operations are suspended and the Walton Avenue premises are vacated.

Deputy Village Administrator Adam Loehner confirmed that a settlement is in the works, but noted that nothing is official until the two parties put words to paper.

“At this time, it’s still a settlement in principle,” Loehner said.  “Really, information about this shouldn’t be out there until the negotiations are finalized and approved in the courts.”

Before then, he added, negotiations are still considered open and nothing is technically off the table.

The Jersey Animal Coalition was placed under quarantine following a joint state and local health inspection in March revealed dozens of code violations. The shelter was allowed to resume operations temporarily after a Superior Court judge granted emergent relief in July.

William Strazza, attorney for the JAC, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
