SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - A 9-year-old from South Mountain Elementary School recently had the opportunity to experience a day in the life of the South Orange president..

Alex James spent the day circulating the village, visiting small businesses and getting a taste of what makes a town like South Orange tick.

“It was a real pleasure to get to take Alex around to some of our best local business owners, who seemed to really enjoy getting to share some of their experience and knowledge with him,” South Orange President Alex Torpey said.

According to James, his favorite part was his trip to the UPS store.

“The best part was going around and learning about all of the different businesses,” he said. The storeowner spent an hour with him going over business logistics, which James said he enjoyed because he hopes to be a businessman one day.

“It's amazing to get to find ways to help bring some more hands-on experiences to our students, as I know for me growing up, and still now, I learn best by doing, and getting out there and seeing things, and so the more we can provide some of those experience to our students the better,” Torpey said.

James’ mother, Nicole, revealed one of the most exciting parts of the experience for her son was a certificate awarded to him at the end, and a picture placed in the meeting room.

“This pretty much made his year,” she said.
