SOUTH ORANGE, NJ— After a four-month search, South Orange has a new village clerk.

The Board of Trustees unanimously appointed Susan Caljean to the position on last Monday “based upon her experience and qualifications,” according to a village news release.

Caljean, who has more than13 years of experience as a New Jersey municipal clerk, has served as a committee member and advisory board ,ember of the Municipal Clerk’s Association of New Jersey and was elected president of the Morris County Clerks’ Association in January 2013.

“It is an honor to be appointed as village clerk/registrar for the Village of South Orange,” Caljean wrote in an email.  “I would personally like to thank Mr. Torpey and all of the members of Board of Trustees and the village administrator for this wonderful opportunity.”

She is a registered municipal clerk, a certified unicipal registrar and is also a certified municipal clerk.  Caljean most recently served as a Chatham Borough Municipal Clerk before being appointed by the Board of Trustees.

The vacant position was left by former Village Clerk Robin Kline, who was not reappointed by the Board of Trustees after her three-year term.

Should Kline have been reappointed, she would have served at least five consecutive years and thus would have become tenured, according to state law.

At that point she could not be removed from her position without “good cause shown after a fair and impartial hearing,” according to NJ Statute 40A: 9-134.
